110' Island-class Patrol Boats

110’ ISLAND-CLASS PATROL BOATS———————————————————————

The 110’ Island-class Patrol Boats were developed and designed in the early 1980s as a replacement for the aging 95’ Cape-class and 82’ Point-class patrol boats with a primary mission focused on illegal drug and migrant interdiction. There were a total of 49 Island-class Patrol Boats commissioned between
1986-1992, six of which were permanently assigned to Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA).
By 2018, all had been decommissioned, having been replaced by the 154’ Sentinel-class cutters.

In the early 1990s, Integrated Coast Guard Systems proposed to significantly modify the Island-class cutters to upgrade their capabilities and extend their service lives until the mid-2010s when the Sentinal-class cutters were planned to replace them. The plan called for a major renovation that would add 13 feet to the ship’s overall length that made room for a high-speed stern launching ramp. This extensive project also included replacing the superstructure to provide the bridge increased visibility, accommodate mixed-gender crews, and updated electronics. Eight of the Island-class patrol boats were converted.

The first to be completed, USCGC MATAGORDA (WPB-1303), made a high-speed transit in September 2004 to avoid Hurricane Ivan in seas that may have exceeded the modified specifications. As a result, the hull buckled during the trip. After considerable research, the hulls of the converted patrol boats were reinforced. While underway in 2006, USCGC NUNIVAK (WPB-1306) experienced significant hull deformation aft of the area that had been fortified. A reason for the failure could not be determined.

Consequently, in 2005 the conversion program was stopped at the eight ships. Sea trials proved the structural integrity of the converted ships were severely and irreparably comprised, essentially rendering them inadequate and unsafe for continued Coast Guard operations. In November 2006, all eight of the converted patrol boats were taken out of service due to incapacitating problems with their lengthened hulls. Shortly thereafter, they were moved to the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, MD, and then permanently decommissioned in December 2006. A few years later, after all reusable parts were harvested, all eight of the converted patrol boats were sent away to be scrapped.
