The Federal Govenment regulates matters that affect the entire country, including national defense, foreign policy, curency, and interstate commerce. Based in Washington, DC, there are three branches of the Federal Government: Executive (President), Legislative (Congress), and Judicial (Supreme Court). Federal law holds superior authority over state and local laws.

A State Government operates under its own executive branch (Governor), constitution, and legislature not under the purview of the Federal Government. With their respective governments, all 50 United States manage matters within its own borders such as state roadways, law enforcement, and public education.

A Local Government is comprised of counties, cities, towns/townships, jurisdictions, and school districts authorized by state governments to handle local requirements such as law enforcement, EMS services, fire & rescue, sanitation, roadway maintenance, and local ordinances. Similar to the other forms of government, local government officials are selected through general or special elections.
