210' Reliance-class Cutters

210’ RELIANCE-CLASS CUTTERS
(MEDIUM ENDURANCE CUTTERS)———————————————————————

The 210’ Reliance-class cutters were commissioned between 1964 and 1969 and replaced the
Prohibition-era 125’ Active-class patrol boats that had been in service since 1926. Under the control of Area Commands, their primary mission has always been search and rescue. However, they also actively participate in illegal drug and migrant interdiction, law enforcement, environmental protection, and marine safety. They are also designed with flight decks to support helo operations. Once known as Cruising Cutters, Second Class and then as Coast Guard patrol craft (WPC), in 1965 they were officially reclassified as Medium Endurance Cutters (WMEC).

As part of the Integrated Deepwater System Program, it was expected that all of the 270’ Famous-class and 210’ Reliance-class Medium Endurance Cutters would eventually be replaced by the 360’ Heritage-class cutters, also known as the Offshore Patrol Cutter and Maritime Security Cutter, Medium. However, major contractual & legal challenges, tighter budget constraints, and unforeseen work stoppages have forced lengthy & costly delays in the construction of the new Heritage-class cutters. As of early 2026,
of the original 25 proposed Heritage-class cutters, only 9 were now planned for construction.

safety management and debris recovery.)

(On 24 November 1995, DAUNTLESS rescued 578 migrants from a significantly overloaded 75-foot coastal freighter. It was the largest number of migrants rescued from a single vessel in Coast Guard history.)
