The Coast Guard is divided into two Area Commands; Atlantic Area (LANTAREA) and Pacific Area (PACAREA). LANTAREA is based in Portsmouth, VA, and covers the eastern United States, the Great Lakes, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and extends to Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia. PACAREA, headquartered in Alameda, CA, encompasses the western United States, the Pacific Ocean, and includes responsibility for areas into Southeast Asia. Area Commands are responsible for strategic planning, coordinating expedient response to major incidents or disasters, and deploying appropriate assets.

Led by Vice Admirals, Area Commands also oversee nine subordinate District Commands:

Northeast District
(formerly 1st District)
Boston, MA
(Includes eight states in the Northeast, including more than 2,000 miles of shoreline from the
U.S.-Canadian border to northern New Jersey and 1,300 miles offshore)

East District
(formerly 5th District)
Portsmouth, VA
(Encompasses six states, Washington, DC, critical waterways, and several major mid-Atlantic ports)

Southeast District
(formerly 7th District)
Miami, FL
(Comprises parts of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, as well as all of the Caribbean)

Heartland District
(formerly 8th District)
New Orleans, LA
(Covers 26 states, the Gulf of Mexico coastline from Florida to Mexico, the adjacent offshore waters and outer continental shelf, as well as the inland waterways of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and Tennessee River systems)

Great Lakes District
(formerly 9th District)

(Reponsible for the five Great Lakes, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and parts of the surrounding eight states including 6,700 miles of shoreline and 1,500 miles of the international border with Canada)

(Comprised of the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, the coastal and offshore waters out over 1,000 miles, and the offshore waters of Mexico and Central America down to South America)

(Includes the Pacific Northwest states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana; as well as a shared
international border with Canada to the north)

Oceania District
(formerly 14th District)
Honolulu, HI
(Responsibility extends from the Hawaiian Islands and across most of the Central and Western Pacific)

Arctic District
(formerly 17th District)
Juneau, AK
(Covers over 3,853,500 sq. miles and over 47,300 miles of shoreline throughout Alaska and the Arctic)
