Coast Guard Auxiliary

COAST GUARD AUXILIARY———————————————————————

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed, all-volunteer civilian element of the U.S. Coast Guard. Originally established by Congress as the Coast Guard Reserve on 23 June 1939, it was renamed on
19 February 1941 as the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Among its missions are promoting, improving and enhancing recreational boating safety, providing trained crews to augment the active duty Coast Guard with the safety and security of ports, waterways, and coastal regions. The Auxiliary also supports
Coast Guard operational, administrative, and logistical requirements.

The Auxiliary has over 21,000 members and units in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam. Its members collectively dedicate over 4.5 million service hours annually and have accomplished close to 500,000 missions in support of the Coast Guard. Each year, Auxiliarists are instrumental in saving nearly 500 lives, aiding 15,000 mariners in distress, performing over 150,000 recreational vessel safety checks, and instructing boating safety knowledge to over half a million citizens. Jointly, the Auxiliary's efforts save American taxpayers several hundred million dollars every year.

Launch No 5 is a restored New York Police Department (NYPD) patrol launch actively in use as a Coast Guard Auxiliary facility, as well as for volunteer non-profit environmental, public safety and educational work. Launch No 5 has a long history beginning with her construction and dedication in 1966 and continuing to this day including valuable missions and enjoying substantial media exposure. Her crew is a group of volunteers who donate time and money to keep her afloat and to take her to public service.

On 27 July 1964 at 0645, Patrolman Henry Walburger and his partner were dispatched to an apartment building in the 9th Precinct of Manhattan for a possible burglary in progress. When they arrived, Patrolman Walburger ascended the fire escape to discover a white male holding two black females hostage. The suspect then fatally shot Patrolman Walburger through the window.

On 18 November 1966, Launch No 5 was christened the Patrolman Walburger in a dedication ceremony attended by department VIPs, Henry's widow and children. All NYPD Harbor Unit patrol launches are given a numbered designation welded to the outside of the wheelhouse. Patrolman Walburger was assigned No 5. Launch No 5 became a floating memorial to Patrolman Walburger as well as very active patrol launch in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City - saving lives, property, and enforcing the law.
