The Coast Guard Bicentennial was celebrated in 1990 with nation-wide commemorations that honored the Coast Guard’s 200 years of service. From its creation as the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service in 1790 under the U.S. Department of Treasury, merging with the U.S. Lifesaving Service, accepting the responsibilities of the U.S. Lighthouse Service and the Bureau of Marine Inspection & Navigation, moving to the
U.S. Department of Transportation, and current positioning under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard has always served the nation with Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty.

The Coast Guard Bicentennial Unit Commendation, authorized on 2 January 1990 by Commandant
ADM Paul A. Yost, Jr., was awarded to all Coast Guard active, reserve, auxiliary, and civilian personnel who served and performed satisfactorily for any period between 4 June 1989 and 4 August 1990. It was issued as a one-time award only that commemorated the founding of the Coast Guard in 1790. This award could also be issued to members of the other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces who were assigned to the Coast Guard during this period and met similar performance and conduct requirements.
