CANADIAN COAST GUARD
&
canadian coast guard auxiliary———————————————————————
The Canadian Coast Guard is a special operating agency within the Department of National Defence that ensures the safety of mariners in Canadian waters and protect Canada’s marine environment. It is also responsible for aids to navigation, search & rescue operations, traffic services, marine communications, icebreaking, and marine hazardous materials response.
The Candiasn Coast Guard is a civilian organization formed in 1962 and based in Ottawa, Ontario. It operates over 120 vessels of varying sizes & classes, more than 20 helicopters, and a variety of smaller craft. The Canadian Coast Guard’s area of responsibility covers Canada’s 109,110 nautical mile coastline, and an area of ocean and inland waters that encompasses approx. 2.3 million square nautical miles.
Unlike the U.S. Coast Guard and other armed coast guards around the world, the Canadian Coast Guard is a government maritime organization without naval or law enforcement responsibilities. The Royal Canadian Navy is wholly responsible for naval operations within Canada’s maritime environment. Despite its lack of naval or law enforcement authority, the Canadian Coast Guard supports naval operations by augmenting the activities of personnel serving with multiple law enforcement agencies.
Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary
The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary is a non-profit organization and a registered charity comprised of volunteers throughout Canada. Created in 1978, it provides support to the Canadian Coast Guard and Department of National Defence with search & rescue, environmental response, and aids to navigation, as well as its public outreach to assist Transport Canada’s Safe Boating Program. The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary also performs many other functions such as humanitarian assistance, maintenance of vessels and equipment, and coordination of fundraising and media events.
